Lewis Carroll (1832–1898) was the pen name of Charles Dodgson, a mathematics teacher at Oxford University. His Alice stories began as tall tales told to his friends’ children on boating trips, but they enjoyed them so much that he was persuaded to write them down. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was first published in 1865; it became an instant classic an and remains one of the most popular children’s books of all time.
